Summer holidays in Ehrwald

Take a time out on the sunny side of the Zugspitze mountain

Head out into nature and the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena! In the Austrian region near Germany's highest mountain, active holidaymakers enjoy relaxing peace & quiet, pristine nature and time-honoured traditions. Some head out with a backpack and hiking boots whilst others enjoy mountain biking or climbing. Family-friendly trails for prams are also available. In the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, a great variety of activities invite you to discover, experience and enjoy the fresh mountain air.

Some activities allow you to clear your mind, whilst still others are sporty and intense. All are enjoyable! Looking for active experiences in pristine nature? The charming villages of Ehrwald, Lermoos, Biberwier, Berwang, Bichlbach, Heiterwang am See and Namlos form the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. Just a stone's throw from the German border, holidaymakers will discover both genuine Tyrolean flair and a wide variety of options for a fulfilling break from everyday life.

Hiking - experience the power of nature

Hiking means taking time, pausing, and quieting the mind. Discover the power of slowing things down. In the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, nature sets the rhythm and more than 150 valley hiking trails, summit tours and adventure trails lead through this spectacular world of no fewer than four mountain ranges at various levels of difficulty. If you don't feel entirely comfortable on your own, contact your local mountain sports schools, which have put together a variety-rich array of tours. In addition to classic high-altitude hikes, the mountain guides also organise themed hikes at sunrise as well as excursions to rushing waterfalls and mysterious mountain lakes.

The Zugspitz Arena: A biking El Dorado

Those who believe that the power of the mountains can only be experienced at a leisurely pace are mistaken. Mountain bikers experience the best that the mountains have to offer and thus draw energy for vitality in everyday life.

Leisurely bikers cycle to the Heiterwanger See lake, whilst trail lovers will discover new sporting challenges on the freeride route on the Grubigstein in Lermoos. More than 100 tours and trails await you in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena! Ranging from the moderately difficult Grubigalm Trail for beginners to the flowing and steeper Blindsee Trail, all routes in the "Approved Bike Area" promise incomparable enjoyment in nature. Those who are interested can join the guided tours or improve their biking technique in the "Skill Area" directly at the valley station of the Grubigstein cable car in Lermoos.

Tip: At the numerous rental and service stations, bikers of all kinds will find a suitable ride, including an e-bike if desired.

Family time in the mountains

No matter the time of year, there is no better playground than nature. From the secrets of herbs to abseiling adventures at the waterfall or legends about the hidden treasure in the Loisach springs, the family-friendly summer activities in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena are not only exciting but also educational. In addition to classic family activities at the lovingly designed children's playgrounds, themed trails or the exciting petting zoo, families can also experience mountain adventures and plenty of action. For example, how about kids’ rafting, monster roller tours or a mountain cart ride?

Also amongst the top 5 activities are the zip line in Bichlbach (guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping) and the 1.3-kilometre summer toboggan run in Biberwier. Those who like things a bit quieter can take a boat trip on the Heiterwanger See lake or explore the Almsee lake high above Ehrwald. On the new path, sporty parents (many with prams) even manage to circle the lake in an hour. Wooden figures, a draw raft, and a water wheel ensure plenty of fun action.

For children between the ages of four and nine, the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena (as a partner region of the Tyrolean Family Nests) also offers a high-quality, free-of-cost children's and youth programme boasting many great adventures.

Recreation and nature enjoyment by the waterside

The lakes in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena are unique and ideal for combining nature and fun. Those keen to cool down on hot days can refresh themselves at idyllic bathing lakes, hike to the Loisach springs or find their inner balance while enjoying stand-up paddling on Heiterwanger See lake. Water lovers will enjoy the Mittersee lake because its muddy water is not only healthy but warms up quickly and often reaches up to 22 degrees. At the same time, the Seebensee lake, with its turquoise blue water, is a true natural gem. Idyllically nestled in the wild mountain, it is situated at 1,675 metres and is the ideal destination for hikers and mountain bikers. Meanwhile, anglers and divers love the Blindsee lake below the Fernpass road. The clear water allows visibility of up to 30 metres.

Climbing - Nature Adventure Playground

Mountains, action and nature enjoyment go hand in hand in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. Whilst some prefer to relax in the sun, others are keen to test their limits while climbing on the rock faces.

Sport climbers can look forward to 160 climbing routes of all levels of difficulty around the Zugspitze. Best of all: the climbing season lasts especially long here, because the routes are oriented to the south. If you prefer to hang out on wire ropes, check out the Tajakante via ferrata (D/E), one of the most scenic via ferrata routes in Austria.

Those who are less drawn to lofty heights can explore the wildly romantic mountain gorges and waterfalls whilst canyoning. A trained local guide is ideal. During the tours, participants literally dive into an enchanted world and get to know the mountain from a new perspective.

Bright night sky and flaming mountains

Even night owls can get in touch with nature in the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, because the action is far from over after sunset.

"Starry Night" is an atmospheric evening event that takes place weekly beneath a clear night sky on the Zugspitze and features a multivision show and live presentation. The legendary mountain fires only illuminate the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena once a year. This year they are on 19 June at the solstice. This is when the longest day and the shortest night are celebrated with spectacular fire motifs. Incidentally, the roots of this custom date back to the 14th century, when people tried to drive away demons and evil spirits with the fires. Bergfeuer: Tyrolean mountain fires

The Zugspitz Arena was declared a UNESCO Intangible World Heritage Site in 2010.

Traditional Tyrolean dishes in summer

Admittedly, in Tyrol most delicacies are enjoyed in summer and winter. In summer, of course, leafy salads, fresh herbs and other seasonal dishes feature on the menu.

Nevertheless, Tyroleans love Spätzle, Kaiserschmarrn shredded pancake, Tyrolean dumplings, fresh produce, tender beef, smoked ham and everything else that is typical of Tyrolean cuisine throughout the year.

In addition to traditional dishes, the region's award-winning chefs are keen to spoil you with all kinds of delicacies. For example, you can also enjoy sushi, burgers or homemade chocolate, if that's what you're in the mood for.

Creativity here in the Alpine region is writ large.
Experience the wide selection of lovingly prepared delicacies for yourself.

Of course, a good glass of wine always enlivens the menu.
